BJP Forms Government in West Bengal for the First Time; Mamata Banerjee Defeated, Suvendu Adhikari Wins Bhowanipur

Kolkata, May 4: In a historic political development, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to form the government in West Bengal for the first time since Independence, following a decisive performance in the 2026 Assembly elections. The outcome marks a major shift in the state’s political landscape, ending the long-standing dominance of the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC).
In a significant setback for the ruling party, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has lost her seat, while BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari has emerged victorious from the high-profile Bhowanipore constituency, further consolidating the party’s position in the state.
According to early data from the Election Commission, the BJP has secured a clear majority in the 294-member Assembly, comfortably crossing the 148-seat mark required to form the government. The party is leading or has won approximately 185–200 seats, while the TMC is trailing with fewer than 100 seats.
In terms of vote share, the BJP is estimated to have received around 43% to 46% of the total votes, indicating a strong and broad-based mandate. Political analysts say the results reflect a major shift in voter sentiment across both urban and rural regions.
Several factors are being credited for this landmark victory. These include the BJP’s sustained grassroots expansion, growing support among young and first-time voters, and a strong anti-incumbency wave against the All India Trinamool Congress after years in power. Additionally, the aggressive campaign led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seen as a key influence in consolidating voter support.
The rise of the BJP in West Bengal has been gradual but steady. From winning just 3 seats in 2016 to securing 77 seats in 2021, the party has now taken a major leap to form the government in 2026.
Experts describe the result as more than just a change in government—it signals a structural transformation in West Bengal’s political dynamics. Focus will now shift to how the new administration delivers on governance and development in the coming years.
