n a shocking and brutal terrorist attack on April 22, 2025, heavily armed militants opened fire on tourists in the picturesque Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, killing at least 28 people and injuring over 20 others. The attackers, reportedly dressed in army-style uniforms, targeted unsuspecting visitors enjoying the popular hill destination, including families, pony riders, and local vendors.
Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as gunfire erupted in the early afternoon, with tourists scrambling for cover. The attackers appeared to selectively target non-Muslims, asking victims to recite Islamic prayers and checking for signs of circumcision, before opening fire.
Among the dead were Indian nationals from multiple states, as well as foreign tourists from Nepal and the UAE. The Resistance Front (TRF), an affiliate of the Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, claimed responsibility for the massacre.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has condemned the attack as a “cowardly act of terror” and cut short his international visit to oversee the response. Security forces have launched a large-scale operation to track down the assailants.
The attack has sparked outrage across the nation and around the world, with global leaders expressing solidarity with India. A special helpline has been set up for the victims’ families, and heightened security measures have been implemented across the Kashmir Valley.
